Glossary of Terms


Adit - Horizontal entrance to a mine slightly inclined to allow drainage of mine.

Bouse teems - Ore storage bunkers..

Dressing Floor - Area where ore is processed to separate it from waste rock and prepare it for smelting.

Flatrods - Iron or wooden rods which transmit power from an engine house to a set of pumps.

Incline Plane - Inclined mine level.

Launder - Wooden box for the conveyance of water.

Level - Horizontal tunnel or passage underground, can also be used as an alternative to Adit.

Ore dressing - The process of cleaning ore, removing waste material and preparing it for smelting.

Rotative beam engine - A beam engine where the reciprocating motion of the engine beam is turned via a crank into rotary motion.

Shafts - Vertical entrances into mines.

Smeltmill - Location where ore is heated and converted to metal.

Stopes - Spaces created where the vein is removed, stoping is the process of removing the vein.

Vein - Vertical or nearly vertical fissure or fault in the rock filled with mineral.

Washing - See ore dressing.
