Cupola Mill
This was the largest smelting complex in the area and was opened in 1792 when it replaced several smaller mills. The mill gets its name from the reverberatory or cupola furnaces installed here which were unusual in Yorkshire. These furnaces burned coal and because the local moor coal could not produce the required high temperatures coal was imported by canal from West Yorkshire. By 1827 the Leeds Liverpool canal had been extended into Lancashire and coal from Burnley was then delivered to Gargrave and carted up to Grassington.
